From William Ewart's journal:

As great as it was to see my family again, the hike catching back up to the group was at the other end of the spectrum -- grueling. I ended up hiking five days to catch up to them, following rock cairns left by the group. Many times I was not sure if I was actually on the right road or not, and if I would actually catch up.

journal

Taking the locals advice to avoid Frakes added an extra 8-9 miles to my catch-up hiking.
After skipping the Frakes turnoff (blue dotted line), I headed east/northeast on Route 92, hitting Route 25E and then
due south to Middlesboro(solid grey line). The two legs of the triangle were definitley longer than the hypotenuse.
