Montreal Fur Trader replica canoes were provided by the Illinois Department of Conservation.
Unfortunately the ice flows in the Mississippi River prevented HikaNation crossing the river
from Missouri to Illinois in these canoes; the Missouri-to-Illinois Wittenberg Ferry was used
instead. The canoes were allowed to be used close to the Illinois shore for a "sample" ride.

Departing the Illinois-to-Kentucky Ferry
January 31, 1981

A Montreal Fur Trader replica canoe was provided by the
Illinois Department of Conservation. The ferry also provided
transportation across the Ohio River from Illinois to Kentucky.

From William Ewart's journal:

Monty came in to the Cave-in-Rock cafe in Illinois to see if everyone would be ready for the 10 o'clock departure - yes.

Then a delay - the Montreal Fur Trader replica canoe was up at the cave and the TV crew wanted it to cross near the ferry point - during the delay, a snowball fight ensued.

When the canoe arrived, Monty tried to organize the departure during the snowball fight and attempted to gather us into a cohesive group. After much cajoling, he halfway succeeded and then urged us to take the canoe, instead of the ferry. More took the ferry which disappointed Monty and the TV and news crews.
