8/8/2020 on Facebook: One of the vistas in Canyonlands. During the cross country hike in 1980 I met a local pioneer, Kent Frost, who had explored Canyonlands and the Glen Canyon area back in the early part of the last century. He shared a story how he and his brother Al Frost (HikaNation's Dark Canyon Pathfinder) would grab a six shooter and walk miles along Escalante Canyon and maybe shoot a Jack Rabbit for dinner and grab a few potatoes from where the local cowboys had them stashed in caves along the way. He wrote a book, My Canyonlands, about the freedom he had in this ancient land...photo by Gomer Pyles. |
8/9/2020 on Facebook: Nostalgia is an incredible drug... July 1980.. Pushed my offspring in an 8 foot long cart across Utah and across the bridge in this photo over the Colorado River...photo by Gomer Pyles. July 2020.. Stopped with the off spring on a turnout to take this photo of the bridge we crossed 40 years before. During the hike I would chat to my off spring about what we were walking by and what we were seeing. At times she would mumble something back. Sharing this experience together as adults...Priceless!! |
8/9/2020 on Facebook: Here is a picture taken 40 years ago on the day we were to cross the [Colorado River] bridge in the photo. I believe the temperature was 108 at 9:00 in the morning...photo provided by Gomer Pyles. 8/11/2020 on Facebook: There were many legs of our cross country journey where we had to split from the group and walk on the road. One of those legs involved an eighty mile section from the Colorado River at Hite to Blanding Utah with very few water options as we were crossing canyons and desert terrain. One of the locals, Al Frost, Kent Frost's brother from a previous post I shared, mentioned 3 spots along the way where we could fill up our water jugs. One place was Natural Bridges National Monument, about 52 miles away, another was a about 65 miles into the stretch where there was a dirt road off to the right that led to a canyon about 2 miles off the path with a water source in a cave, and the third place, about 26 miles away, called Fry Canyon. Fry Canyon was a bar/restaurant that also provided housing for some of the uranium miners in the area. We were so lucky they were open to fetch water and get out of the sun for a bit. We would walk at night then rest until we saw Venus come up then walk until about 10am. By that time the temp was 108 or so degrees.. We would find shade under the random tree and rest. A local miner let us sleep on his porch for the night. He spoke about how he had spent most of his time in Copper mines which tended to be hotter than hell, and that working in the uranium minds was cold. |
