The Hikers 60 of Scott's Shots Hikers by Rex HikaNation

Kurt Guerrein on HikaNation

(From Paula Guerein) Kurt was just out of the USAF and started with Marce, Cindy and all hikers crossing the Oakland Bay Bridge, CA, on the 13th, after dipping boots in the Pacific Ocean on April 12, 1980. He hiked California, Nevada and most of Utah. He received a plaque for hiking three months on the trail with the group.

Marce's journal last records him with her on July 21 and he may have left before July 30. He was having foot problems with his heavy Vasque boots.

Kurt recalls he rode with Monty for two days after his ankles finally gave out. In typical Monty fashion, Monty asked, "How long am I going to carry you in my van?"
Kurt said "No longer", and Monty dropped him at a road nearest the town.

Kurt spent a few days in town to see the foot doctor, who diagnosed bone spurs on ankles. The doctor said his tendons were working doubly hard and swelling into sheath, and for him to stay off his feet. The doctor gave cortisone shots, Motrin RX and sent him on his way.

Running low on money, Kurt took a bus to Albuquerque, NM, to find work. He had long hair and no one would hire him. He left for Roswell, NM, where he worked two years for a landscape contractor.

(Website note follows) Kurt Guerrein left just before July 30th so it looks like Kurt was around July 21st at the Lake Powell Colorado Bridge crossing area campsite, near Hite Marina.

We then hiked through Dark Canyon and Monty resupplied us at the Gooseberry Guard Station on the 27th - 28th of July, after we exited Dark Canyon.

He might have ridden the next two days with Monty as the group hiked over the Blue Mountains to Monticello. So Monty might have ditched him there, or further south in Blanding or ??, depending on the route Monty took out of Gooseberry.
