March 4, 1981 -- Day 327

Tim, Scott and I decided to take a break from the hike when we happened upon I-75 on March 2nd. Our hitch-hiking journeys took us to Findlay, Ohio (Tim's home), Dearborn Heights, Michigan (Scott's home), and then when we returned to the "HikaNation trail". I decided to hitch-hike to Atlanta to visit my family on March 4th. Tim and Scott resumed the hike, catching up to the group in a few days.

March 7, 1981 -- Day 330

I hitch-hiked to Atlanta to visit one of my brothers and then drove to see my parents in Toccoa, Ga. They then drove me back to the point I had left HikaNation so that I could resume the hike without missing a step of the way. I still wonder how many extra days it would have taken to reach that point if my parents had not driven me there. Words could not express my thanks for them taking the time out to drive me there.

Before my parents returned me to the "trail", we drove to Monty's airstream (now in Virginia) to find out the general direction of the hike and several cities ahead of them.

As great as it was to see my family again, the hike catching back up to the group was at the other end of the spectrum -- grueling. I ended up hiking five days to catch up to them, following rock cairns left by the group. Many times I was not sure if I was actually on the right road or not, and if I would actually catch up.

I finally caught up to them in Gate City, Va. on 3/12/81, after five days of hiking -- mileage totals for those days were approximately 27, 30, 29, 34, and 15.
