From William Ewart's journal:

Up at 630am. To the Methodist Church later for a good breakfast of scrambled eggs-bacon-toast-coffee-rolls-cake. Randy played Exodus and other songs on the piano before breakfast. Monty suggested $2 donation per hiker for lodging and the meal.

Finished The Tin Drum the last ten miles while hiking to camp then returned it to the Airstream "library". With sunglasses on - strange eerie feeling - landscape very much like Kansas, no hills today. Route 109 south out of Providence, then straight to here on Route 1034.

Fetched water and fuel around 5pm to cook supper - damn, what happened to the sunshine and partly cloudy skies - almost completely overcast, grey, windy, and colder! Mud in the corn field now hard and so are my boots. Cleaned them and will stuff them into bottom of sleeping bag overnight to keep them from freezing.

Clouds thinned out and seemed to be receding to the east and south leaving a nice red sunset lighting up the clouds.

Churches on every corner - the Bible Belt!!

About 15 or so hiked ahead to Madisonville and stayed in the library there. That option was not widely known so everyone else stayed tonight, here at Route 1034, Mining Company Land - (Rosecreek Road just north of the Zielger mine tipple).

Monty picked Howard up from the hospital tonight - Tuesday. Howard was in the hospital Monday nite to Tuesday with blood poisoning from an infected finger with a splinter in it. He thought the blood poisoning streaks only extended to his wrists, but the nurse at the Armory in Marion had him take off his shirt and they wrapped around his arm up to his shoulder. "Another day and it might have meant amputation!!!!" YIKES!!
