Waiting for the ferry to cross the Ohio River, from Illinois to Kentucky. (photo by William Ewart) |
From William Ewart's journal: Monty came in to the Cave-in-Rock cafe to see if everyone would be ready for the 10 o'clock departure - yes. Then a delay - the Montreal Fur Trader replica canoe was up at the cave and the TV crew wanted it to cross near the ferry point - during the delay, a snowball fight ensued. When the canoe arrived, Monty tried to organize the departure during the snowball fight and attempted to gather us into a cohesive group. After much cajoling, he halfway succeeded and then urged us to take the canoe, instead of the ferry. More took the ferry which disappointed Monty and the TV and news crews.

From William Ewart's journal: Sunny, windy & in the 30's - changed quickly soon after the Ohio crossing into completely overcast & cooler - front from the south. Prediction of rain tomorrow. After crossing the Ohio river, the day's route was road-walking on Route 91 to Marion, Kentucky.

From William Ewart's journal: Inside the National Guard Armory - another basketball court but on cold concrete floor, not wood. Fans going all the time but still good acoustics for the recorder. 2 solo sessions and then quick duets with Randy. Walked around with National Guard Armory recruitment pamphlet "Who Needs You" and flashed it at Tim Geoghegan, Dave Chernow, and Paul Petracca, who shot me a bird.....dooh. After dropping my pack at the National Guard Armory, I went to the local grocery store. On the way back from groceries, a man offered me a lift and this conversation ensued: Local Man: "So you're one of those hitchhikers?" Me: "No, not suppose to take rides when "on the route", but OK when going back and forth to established campsites. I've walked the 3000+ miles to here so far, etc., etc." Local Man: "Are you a Christian?" Me: Dreaded the usual lecture so I said "yes", then added that my father was a Presbyterian minister. Local Man: He was pleased since he thought we were a bunch of pagan heathens. Great cinnamon rolls at the Marion grocery store....might go back tomorrow for more!! |
