Photo and comments from Gomer Pyles, Facebook entry:
I went to the first American Hiking Society "Hike In" located at Prince William Forest,
Virginia in May of 1979.
I felt that I needed to go just to see what was going on since we would be bringing a baby along. I loaded up my truck in California with Jade Plants to sell along the road to help pay for the trip.
After the Hike-In, a group of us went up into Shenandoah National Park to go hiking and camping for a few days. I took this photo toward the beginning of one of our day hikes.
I recognize Jim Kern (far left), Ed Garvey (holding camera, right of Kern), and Joe Shute (far right).
